Nature-Based Carbon Removal Through Enhanced Weathering

The basaltic material in TephraMax®  permanently sequesters about 300 kg of CO2 per ton of material applied as the weathering of basalt naturally produces soluble bicarbonate ions. CO2 sequestration by TephraMax® is verifiable through measurements of beneficial bicarbonate in soil pore water and runoff using in-situ electrical conductivity and pH meters and by tracing index minerals and trace elements unique to TephraMax ®.

How CO2 Sequestration with TephraMax ®Works:

  1. CO2 in the atmosphere and soil combines with water to form carbonic acid.

  2. Carbonic acid dissolves minerals in the basalt releasing cations and carbonate ions.

  3. Bicarbonate ions move into porewater solutions or are deposited as soil carbonate.

  4. Dissolved bicarbonate ions are transported through groundwater and streams.

  5. Bicarbonate ions reach the ocean for long-term storage reducing ocean acidity.
